  • Heal the root of your people-pleasing

  • Undo perfectionism and over-responsibility

  • Learn to trust your intuition

  • Build the life you are excited to wake up to every day

Ready to ditch the "good girl" conditioning?

Life is waaaay too short to keep putting up this façade. This mask you wear pretending to be fine. Fearful that the next mistake, critique, or request will completely derail you. You are barely holding everything together like that thread you are dangling by is about to snap. You wonder, "how did I get here?"

You always drop everything for others. You feel guilty doing anything for yourself. You apologize for having needs, wants, and feelings. You strive for perfection. Yet, you never feel good enough. You are constantly trying to prove yourself, but the bar keeps getting higher.

You look at your life and think, "isn't this what I wanted?" You got the job, the family, the friends. You followed the "right" path. You played by all the rules. You did exactly what was expected of you. Yet, you are unhappy and unfulfilled.

You ignore that inner voice whispering, "something has to change." You continue making excuses and going over the "what ifs." Your anxious brain tells you it is too risky, too hard. You dig your heels and reinforce the "good girl" mask.

But that mask is preventing anyone, even yourself, from knowing the real you. It is weighing you down, numbing you out, and blocking true connection with others, your body, and your intuition. The mask has created a life that works for everyone but you. You finally start to listen to that inner voice that is now screaming, "SOMETHING HAS TO CHANGE!"

If this sounds like you, you’re in the right place, and I’ve got you.

Dr. Emily Altunay, EMDR and anxiety therapist

Imagine a life where your inner gold shines

I love a good metaphor. In 13th century Thailand, a 5.5 ton golden statue of Buddha was covered in clay to disguise it from attacking armies. For centuries, the ‘clay’ statue was largely forgotten. In 1955, a group trying to move the statue dropped it, creating cracks in the surface with a strange glimmer. They chipped away at the clay to reveal a 10-foot, gold Buddha! It now sits prominently in a temple in Bangkok.

Let your gold be the star of your life.

You may be wondering if therapy even works for you, but you finally agreed to listen to that inner voice screaming for change and give it a chance. With my guidance, we will chip away your "good girl" mask to reveal your inner gold. This is therapy that is more than a little perspective, more than some coping tools, more than changing thoughts and behaviors. We will work together to heal the root of your "good girl" conditioning, so you never end up here again. You will finally let go of the trauma, anxiety, and limiting patterns that have caused you to burn out. You will learn to stay in tune with your body, spirit, and intuition, and let that inner voice guide your life. You will feel light, confident, and clear on who you really are and what you want. In no time, you'll be telling energy vampires to back off, attracting abundance, and taking time for yourself like your life depends on it, because it does!

If this sounds like the life you want to live, I'm ready when you are.

Maya's Story

Meet Maya

Maya came to therapy after her husband and young adult son with special needs told her she needed help coping with anger outbursts. She had everything she wanted. A loving family, a successful career, and lots of friends. Yet, she was unhappy and snapping at her loved ones.

The Reality Behind the Façade

-Working 60-hours per week at a job she hates

-Running a "side-hustle"

-Dropping everything for requests from her son, boss, and friends

-Disconnected from her husband and his needs

-Unsure of what self-care is and what she enjoys doing

Stabilization

First, Maya learned several emotion-regulation tools to help manage her anger. She also learned mindfulness and self-Compassion skills, so she could sit with the difficult emotions swirling in her body underneath the anger.

Healing the Root

Through EMDR therapy, Maya uncovered that her childhood experiences of living in poverty with parents who worked all the time led to her "good girl" mask. She learned that attention and love were conditional on her successes, emotional suppression, obedience, and staying out of trouble. Her nervous system learned "If I'm not perfect, I'll lose everything."

A combination of EMDR, IFS, and breathwork allowed her to release emotional baggage from these childhood wounds, reprocess the memories, update her nervous system, and learn to lead with love, compassion, and intuitive wisdom.

Six Months Later

-She quit the job she hated.

-She kept her "side-hustle," which was her true passion, but kept strict boundaries.

-She let go of friends who took advantage of her "good girl" conditioning

-She started discovering new interests and activities that "filled her cup," such as pickle-ball, trying new restaurants, and meditation

-She started asking her husband and parents for help in caring for her son's needs

-She prioritized dates 2x/month with her husband

-Her husband and son also said she was a lot easier and fun to be around

-She was excited to wake up each day

Maya didn't become someone new. She just stopped carrying the beliefs that weren't hers to begin with, let go of emotions that had gotten stuck in her nervous system, and began listening to her intuition.

Common Questions

About Therapy

What issues do you help people with?

I specialize in working with women navigating burnout, anxiety, and trauma. Many of my clients are high-functioning on the outside, but feel overwhelmed, anxious, or stuck in limiting patterns underneath. Often, the women I work with end up in the virtual chair across from me due to conditioned patterns of people-pleasing, over-responsibility, difficulty setting boundaries, emotional suppression, and poor or non-existent self-care.

Our work will focus on helping you understand the patterns beneath these struggles, reprocess them so you can heal, re-calibrate your nervous system, so you can feel more grounded, confident, and motivated in your daily life.

How do I know if I need trauma therapy?

You don't need to have experienced a single, major event to benefit from trauma therapy. Many limiting patterns evolve over the course of several small events or conditioning from childhood.

If you often feel anxious, overwhelmed, stuck in limiting patterns, and like your nervous system is always "on," trauma-informed therapy can help you understand and shift those patterns.

What is EMDR therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a therapy backed by research that helps your brain process and your nervous system heal from overwhelming or distressing experiences.

Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR uses bilateral stimulation to help connect these distressing memories that are "stuck" in your nervous system to your Adaptive Information Processing system. This processing allows you to release emotions from your body and shift limiting patterns, so you can move forward with ease and confidence.

I use EMDR, as well as several other approaches, to help you heal. EMDR is just one therapy that may be incorporated into your treatment when it feels appropriate to your treatment goals.

How does EMDR therapy differ from "talk therapy"?

Talk therapy helps you understand your "good girl" beliefs and patterns that are keeping you stuck. You may gain insight into where the "good girl" mentality came from, how it shows up, and strategies to manage it. Sometimes, you will have to talk about and relive past distressing experiences.

EMDR therapy, on the other hand, goes further by helping your brain to reprocess the distressing experiences that created the "good girl" patterns to begin with, so they no longer trigger the same emotional and physical responses. Furthermore, EMDR allows your brain to heal itself, without necessarily reliving the painful memories.

With talk therapy, you might spend months, or even years, venting or talking why you feel stuck and practicing coping strategies.

With EMDR, you target specific memories, like a moment when your parent's love felt conditional on achievement or a time when you were praised by a teacher for not expressing your emotions, and reprocess them using bilateral stimulation. The result is more than just understanding the root of your "good girl" conditioning, but embodied change. You don't just know intellectually how you need to change, but the nervous system is updated and actually believes it. Many clients can feel shifts in weeks or months that discussion alone can never achieve.

Do you offer therapy online?

Yes, I only provide online therapy to clients residing throughout New York and California.

Virtual therapy is just as effective as in-person therapy. Research shows comparable outcomes for treating trauma, anxiety, and burnout.

Many clients actually prefer online therapy because they feel safer processing difficult material and vulnerable emotions from the comfort and privacy of their home. Online therapy also eliminates the need to operate a vehicle or navigate public transportation immediately following a session when you'd prefer to engage in self-care or re-grounding. Virtual sessions are also convenient because you eliminate commute time and can schedule between meetings and other responsibilities. You can attend from your office, home, or even while traveling.

How long does therapy take?

Therapy looks different for everyone. Some clients come for one targeted goal, while others present with more complex patterns and conditioning and prefer to be in therapy longer for deeper work.

That said, my approach is rooted in healing. You won't need to be in therapy for years like talk therapy. Many clients notice significant shifts and improvements in as little as 6-12 weekly sessions, while others with more complex histories benefit from 6-12 months of work.

Changes often happen in layers: you might notice behavioral shifts (like setting boundaries, or engaging in some self-care) before underlying beliefs fully transform. The goal isn't just temporary symptom relief, but lasting change.

We'll regularly assess your progress and check-in with your goals to ensure the treatment is creating the healing you're seeking.

How do I know if I've been conditioned to be a "good girl"?

"Good girl" conditioning can manifest differently for different women. However, generally, women in our society have historically been expected to be obedient, suppress their needs and emotions, and be perfect mothers, wives, daughters, friends, and employees. Some women were also conditioned to believe that love, attention, and affection were conditional on people-pleasing, perfectionistic, over-responsibility, and over-giving patterns.

Gender-based pressures, discrimination, and traumas can further impact the "good girl" conditioning and the expectation for women to "do it all" without complaint and make it look easy. There are a zillion things on women's to-do lists everyday, ranging from being successful at work, running a home, and caring for loved ones.

No wonder women are burning out and suffering from mental health issues at higher rates than men! For example, anxiety impact 23% of women compared to 14% of men.

With so much demand, there isn't much space carved out for women to try new things, make mistakes, and take care of their own needs. And "good girls" are also conditioned to feel guilty if we dare to engage in self-care. Women are conditioned to believe that they are weak if they can't figure things out on their own, or called b*tchy or selfish if we speak up about our needs and emotions.

Therapy is a space for you to be curious and open with your emotions, rewire the "good girl" conditioning, so you experience less loneliness, anxiety, and burnout in your life. You'll feel connected and supported, which can open up your life to new, authentic possibilities, outside of societal, cultural, and familial norms and expectations.

What is intuition?

Intuition is your "gut feeling." It's that little voice inside of you telling you that something has to change or guiding you to make certain choices.

Unfortunately, intuition can get suppressed and ignored on top of the "good girl" conditioning, external pressures and expectations, overthinking, feat, and survival responses. Often, your anxious brain wants you to believe its the "real" you. However, intuition speaks through the body and spirit. Your intuition is the true self.

Through therapy, you will let go of emotional baggage from your body and rewire the "good girl" conditioning in your brain, so you can learn to listen to your intuition. You'll be better able to discern the difference between thoughts and intuitive wisdom. You'll start pausing before making decisions to see what your intuition is telling you. You'll build a life that feels truly aligned.

What is Clairsentience?

Clairsentience means “clear sense.” It's a coming home to your body. And that will be the work in therapy--a safe space to clear out and heal the emotional baggage weighing you down and keeping you out of touch with your body and, thus, your intuition. Once you heal it and release it, you learn to listen to the true wisdom of your body, energy, and spirituality. The more you listen and act on those "gut feelings," the more your inner gold shines.

Let intuition guide your life.
